MEMBRANES FOR ELECTROCHEMICAL TECHNOLOGY

Sample Course Synopsis

Lancaster, New York

Ion permeable membranes now have an important role in modern electrochemical technology.  The Course will cover the fundamental chemistry of these membranes as well as their applications; the objective will be to provide participants with an understanding essential to the successful use of membranes in electrochemical technology. Topics to be covered include:

  • Synthesis of membrane polymers
  • Membrane fabrication
  • Structure of membrane polymers
  • Physical chemistry of membrane polymers
  • Methods of study
  • The role of water
  • The link between membrane structure, properties and performance
  • Transport properties: selectivity, conductivity etc.
  • Membrane cells for chlor-alkali manufacture
  • Electrolytic and salt splitting processes
  • Electrodialysis
  • Fuel cells and batteries
  • Bipolar membranes
  • Strategies for prolonging membrane life
  • Commercially available membranes
  • Recent trends and future developments

Instructors (Sample)

The Course will be presented by Professor Derek Pletcher (University of Southampton, England) and Dr. J. David Genders (Electrosynthesis Company, Inc.) and a number of membrane manufacturers and suppliers. Participants will be invited to visit the R & D facility at Electrosynthesis Company to view the diverse range of membrane applications under investigation. Participants will also be offered the opportunity to visit a local membrane chlor-alkali plant on the morning following the course.
